Speaking of which, when are we getting back that WCoL forum?
There’s no demand. The demand was eaten up by the Discord…
Have you asked people on the Discord that? Because I don’t agree. I think there’s something soul-sucking about replacing it with Discord.
With Discord there’s some kind of built-in desire for speed and regularity, but with a forum everything simply exists and is okay to be interacted with when you need it. When you have an unused forum board, it’s just there waiting to be used, being only as used as it has needed to be. When you have an unused Discord channel, you have something that feels like an atrophying organ, just because of how Discord is. Everything on Discord is a flow, every message a drop of water and nothing standing out with its own identity. Every channel is a forever-ongoing process, always happening but never complete–until the channel or server is deleted. Any cessation of this is like a limb cut off from circulation. But a forum is somewhere to create things so that they can stand, not just add on things to make a chatroom keep breathing. Everywhere is its own space, every topic is its own thing, not just blending into slurry of words being said and moshing together like primordial soup.
On Discord, there’s a fixed hierarchy where if you want to access something older in a channel, some older conversation, you need either to remember a key word, have it pinned (a limited resource) or just scroll up. And on some channels, that’s a long time. If, however, you want to find an old forum post, you look on it from a list, a list of titles wherein no topic since is left sprawling out in its entirety, requiring you to scroll through sporadic messages and memes. Even if you can’t search it, the act of weeding through the other topics is much easier when they’re each confined to their own space and represented with just a name.
Servers on Discord are also very prone to getting deleted. You can’t tell me that our server, the one where Nada is constantly railing against Jews, the server where we make fun of Redditors, the server where we even dare to have more than one political ideology and neither of them are pozzed Hank Green discipleship, is going to last forever. And me personally, I get sentimental about banter, and all the other small things. I think that’s as worth holding onto as the intellectual discussion, and I’d even say it’s just as important, as the heart is to the mind. You say this place is for people who ‘are all memed out’, but I frankly don’t think our servers are exactly exhausting in that category, and the old WCoL certainly wasn’t. It was heartful, and creative, and people were personable and humorous but not obnoxious and annoying. It wasn’t the JimmyHere silliness that you get burnt out on, it was the moderated charm that creatives shared,
There’s also just a matter of status. Do you really want to be just another Discord server that happens to have a cool flag and a name? Or would you rather we be our own site, our own place, on our own sovereign territory? Any dimwit can make a Discord server, and it doesn’t take much to make an image, and have ideas in mind for a creative name. Do you really want to stoop down to drink with the asses? To be a digital Nebuchadnezzar, working on the level of animals after having been a king? That’s what it is to be reduced to a Discord server, with “anime girl picture E-dating server with [Toxic] and [4chan] number 1428” and “Everything-but-open-discourse-positive gay furry memes and porn server number 128006” as your peers. Be your own nation, fly your own flag, come out of Egypt and leave Discord to serve only to replace that incredibly poor chatroom feature you had on WCoL. Don’t delete the server, but by all means make it a ‘backburner’ kind of thing. Make it for if someone wants to talk but not start a subject, just needs a chat but doesn’t want a discussion, the casual, low-energy lounge for people to say words and socialize and verbally bounce around but not actually build anything with it all.
“What is true of one man, said the judge, is true of many. The people who once lived here are called the Anasazi. The old ones. They quit these parts, routed by drought or disease or by wandering bands of marauders, quit these parts ages since and of them there is no memory. They are rumors and ghost in this land and they are much revered. The tools, the art, the building–these things stand in judgement on the latter races. Yet there is nothing for them to grapple with. The old ones are gone like phantoms and the savages wander these canyons to the sound of an ancient laughter. In their crude huts they crouch in darkness and listen to the fear seeping out of the rock. All progressions from a higher to a lower order are marked by ruins and mystery and a residue of nameless rage. So. Here are the dead fathers. Their spirit is entombed in the stone. It lies upon the land with the same weight and the same ubiquity. For whoever makes a shelter of reeds and hides has joined his spirit to the primal mud with scarcely a cry. But who builds in stone seeks to alter the structure of the universe and so it was with these masons however primitive their works may seem to us.”
He makes a good point here: if there’s no humanity in the treatment of other posters, then there can’t really a sense of community
Apparently Reddit has gotten more negative over time.
I miss pre-2017 Youtube. I miss LeafyisHere. I miss when gay retards who worshiped weakness and victimhood were sequestered to niche communities. I heard a retard once describe my personal and empirical observation that progressives worship weakness as ‘Fox News propaganda’, because to them everyone who isn’t a gay retard is part of a monolith of ‘pwroblematickness’ and so Fox News is the same thing as Richard Spencer, who is the same thing as Leafyishere, who is the same thing as the thirteen year old kid who won’t swallow their bullshit propaganda or lobotomize how he talks according to their entitled demands.
That kind of person is everyone now. Every retard who makes a post that ends up on Youtube Shorts smugly insinuating that not wanting blacks rammed into media as a sacrifice of source material fidelity in the name of corporate tokenism (euphemistically referred to with words like ‘diversity’ and ‘representation’ and amounting to pathetic, placative gestures to meekly gratify minority groups and their larger followings of retarded sycophants) entails being a diminutive strawman of an impotently-angry KKK member, a meme that weak toddlers use to plunge people above them even lower than them. Every child who regurgitates babby’s first conspiracy theory, or wields a strawman image of an edgelord, to avoid confronting that other people are naturally ‘edgier’ than they are, or than they are comfortable with. Every manchild who screeches with ridicule at people less ridiculous than they. People have been forced into diapers in so many figurative ways that they’ll sputter in incomprehension at the idea of boxers, and I blame the bladderless corpos pandering to other bladderless corpos who want to pander to the lower common denominator. That’s who’s at the top of the chain. That’s who we’re all slaves to. The lowest common denominator, the cattle of the world.
