I work in a factory, and the boomers are starting to retire. In their absence, the millennials and zoomers are much more lax – so much so it’s eerie. It’s like no one gives af

People go to break early, leave late, hang out in the bathroom all day, play on their phones, pretend to work. Some people even show up to work in their pajamas. The workers horseplay, shouting animal noises at each other. I recall a manager got upset at two guys who were messing around and threatened to send them home.

I keep overhearing about how the standards are declining, how people are slacking, how the management doesn’t care.

I think with wage stagnation, nobody really cares if they get fired or not because all jobs pay roughly in the same bottom-dollar range. The boomers believe in hard work, the younger generation knows it’s not meritocratic and isn’t inspired.

This is probably what it was like in the Soviet Union. Just every level of the operation slacking off.

This definitely reflects my experience as some one who also works in a factory, At least in my case it seems like management made a conscious decision to stop enforcing basic rules. This seems to have started 5 or so years ago and sort of made sense at the time as they were terrified of not being able to keep or hire people. But that time is over and we just stuck with the low, anything-goes standards.

You say that like it is a bad thing. Cmon! Accelerate the collapse!

If it makes you feel any better, I am a “zoomer” but yesterday at work I was too busy to take my lunch break.

(I lacked the shekels for lunch)

yeah i was in the lab and the two phd guys were talking about cs:go. it also became a pretty common occurence that i arrived at the workplace and was immediately invited to come and eat something in the kitchen or to some sort of celebration, or people would be late and it would be taken as a given. i’m done pretending that work isn’t adult daycare. this wouldnt even be so bad if they at least didn’t frame everything as hyper professional. taking frequent and generous breaks and submitting to the fact that your life’s wages subsist on the exploitation of starving kids in thailand somewhere. it’s getting to a point where criminals are more honest workers than employees are.

This might sound neurally fermented to say, but if everyone’s on board with it then it’s almost alright. As long as you don’t have the pressures of professionality, to do everything right and stiff and proper, and as long as we live in a world where people accept that whatever depends on our labor will be garbage insofar as that sloppiness makes it so, then it’s a fair deal.

Ngl I dress better than the average American but when I went to Europe on a vacation, I felt all the Europeans outperformed me and I was happy to get back home. 😭

My chaotic little clown brain can’t handle anymore masking than I’m already doing.
