I never properly understood this phrase. When I was younger, I thought it basically meant that the world is artificial and meaningless - synthesized by mankind for whatever goals the architects of society had.
Now, I realize that it’s not that, at all. It’s saying that we ought to always be acting. We should always control our behavior to make ourselves look good and get good reactions from others.
This phrase is expressing the exact opposite of “just be yourself.“ It’s saying, “don’t be yourself, be a great actor and hold that constantly.“
At this age, I’m realizing how much of normie life I never understood. Normies had this entire way of behaving, and this entire priority hierarchy which was massively different from mine.
My recent adventure is the idea that I must prioritize - and I mean top priority here - maintaining a state of calmness of mind. I must avoid everything that even slightly increases my anxiety levels. For example, I don’t look at people often in public anymore. It makes me get ever so slightly more anxious.
I’m realizing that normies have always behaved in this way. But they never explain why. It’s like they want to keep the secrets of success away from others.
And, another normie-rule that I never understood is that we really should not just be ourselves. For example, if you are really excited to see a beautiful girl, you should not show it outwardly. Instead, you should act. You should act as if you are not noticing the beauty at all. This goes, whether you are hitting on her, or whether you are a 70-year old and she is 15. Acting is how you have success with people, and it is how you maintain social environments that do not induce headaches or panic attacks, and it is also how you become charismatic. It’s not the only thing (if it was the only thing on your mind, you’d be pressurized and repressed beyond a breaking point), but it’s something that must be there for you to live well.
The infuriating thing is how many normies give the bad, opposite advice of “be yourself.” I guess they think it is nice or something.
