Police are more cost-efficient at preventing crime than prisons are, at the price points we are looking at in the USA. Which is to say the we have too many prisons and not enough cops. The only way out of this is to say we could make prison much cheaper. Maybe we could cut the expenses and private dividends of the prisons. Maybe we could have a multi-tier system where the more certain your guilt, the more extensive your criminal record, the shittier your conditions- but there would be legal issues with this.

It’s strange how they use this example of a person who goes free because my disgust with someone who hurts their dog (which they intend to evoke) is closer to their “fear of the other” than any kind of need for safety. The bad people they show aren’t unsafe people AFAICT, so they don’t pose an actual example for their argument. (which they could do, but they suck, and it’s a dumb argument anyway)

The comments there for the most part rip this garbage to shreds which is in a way disappointing.
She is right that mass incarceration is relatively new, but so is mass society. There is no way in hell you are going to keep a modern society (ie a supermassive economic zone) in working order without some choice application of ultraviolence.
